The Most Iconic French Classic Cars of All Time
Share
France gave the world cars of wit, innovation and charm, from the humble 2CV to the futuristic DS. While Italy chased glamour and Germany chased precision, the French built machines that thought differently, blending clever engineering with a flair for the unexpected. The result is a roll call of icons unlike anything else on the road.
We have chosen these six for the mark they left on design, motorsport and motoring culture, from farmyard workhorses to Grand Prix legends. Read on, and follow the links to dive deeper into each story.
Citroen DS
When the DS landed in 1955 it looked like it had been beamed in from another century, with hydropneumatic suspension that let it glide over the roughest French roads. Crowds at the Paris Motor Show were so stunned that Citroen took 12,000 orders on the first day. Few cars have ever made the rest of the world feel quite so behind the times.
Citroen 2CV
Designed to carry four farmers and a basket of eggs across a ploughed field without breaking a single shell, the 2CV turned humble practicality into something close to art. Its corrugated bonnet, canvas roof and cheerful simplicity made it a national treasure that stayed in production for 42 years. Nothing else on earth manages to be this basic and this beloved at the same time.
Renault Alpine A110
Tiny, light and impossibly pretty, the Alpine A110 took on the giants of world rallying and beat them with sheer agility. Its rear-mounted engine and feather weight made it a giant killer on the loose stages, sealing the first ever World Rally Championship in 1973. This is the car that proved France could build a sports car with genuine bite.
Peugeot 205 GTI
Many call the 205 GTI the finest hot hatch ever built, and on the right road it is hard to argue. Light, eager and gloriously playful on the limit, it delivered thrills that far more expensive machinery could only dream of. It defined a golden era of affordable performance and still leaves modern drivers grinning.
Renault 5 Turbo
Renault took its cheeky little supermini, ripped out the back seats and dropped a turbocharged engine right behind the driver. The result was a wide-arched, fire-breathing rally weapon that looked like the standard car had been to the gym and lost its mind. Few transformations in motoring history are this gloriously unhinged.
Bugatti Type 35
With its horseshoe grille and elegant blue bodywork, the Type 35 is widely regarded as the most successful racing car of all time. It racked up well over a thousand victories in the 1920s, dominating Grand Prix racing with a blend of beauty and engineering brilliance. This is where Bugatti built its legend, one chequered flag at a time.
