2026 Canadian Grand Prix Review: Antonelli Survives Russell Drama to Claim Fourth Win
Share
Kimi Antonelli made it four wins from five races in 2026, taking a commanding victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal as the Canadian Grand Prix delivered drama, retirements and a stunning late-race battle for the ages.
The Italian teenager, just 19 years old, crossed the line to extend his championship lead to 43 points, but this was far from straightforward. His teammate George Russell had been leading before a power unit failure on lap 30 brought the race to an abrupt and furious conclusion for the Briton.
Russell Leads, Then Retires in Heartbreak
The early stages were dominated by a breathless battle between the two Mercedes drivers. Russell and Antonelli swapped positions repeatedly in a high-speed duel that had the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve crowd on its feet. A lock-up from Russell on lap 22 allowed Antonelli to briefly sneak ahead, before the Briton retook the position through sheer pace.
Then, on lap 30, Russell pulled over on track with a terminal power unit failure. He climbed from the car looking visibly furious, and his frustration was entirely understandable. A victory that looked firmly in his grasp had evaporated in an instant. A Virtual Safety Car was deployed to recover the stricken Mercedes, and most of the field dived into the pits to take advantage.
Antonelli Manages to Victory
Antonelli pitted for medium tyres during the VSC period and emerged with a 4.6 second advantage over the pursuing pack. From there, the young Italian was measured and controlled, managing his pace and his rubber to bring the car home without incident.
A further Virtual Safety Car period added a brief period of tension, but Antonelli never looked in danger. His fourth victory of the season was another reminder of the extraordinary talent now leading the Mercedes attack.
Hamilton Hunts Down Verstappen in Classic Duel
Behind the leader, the battle for second produced the moment of the race. Lewis Hamilton had been locked in a gripping fight with Max Verstappen through the closing stages, the pair separated by just tenths. On lap 62, Hamilton found a way past Verstappen to claim second place for Ferrari.
"I absolutely loved that battle," Hamilton said after the race. "Max is always tough to pass, but I found the right moment. This is what racing is about."
It was a hugely significant result for Hamilton, who is beginning to extract the best from the Ferrari SF-26. Charles Leclerc recovered to fourth, giving Ferrari a strong haul of points on a day when Mercedes were again dominant at the front.
Verstappen Shows Red Bull Improvement
Third place for Verstappen was Red Bull's best result of the 2026 season and a sign that the team are beginning to recover from the nightmare start to the year. The Dutchman drove with his customary aggression on the streets of Montreal, and although he was ultimately unable to hold off Hamilton, his pace throughout was encouraging.
Teammate Isack Hadjar finished fifth on a positive afternoon for the Milton Keynes outfit.
Midfield Battles: Alpine, Racing Bulls and Williams Score
Franco Colapinto delivered a superb sixth place for Alpine, continuing his impressive form from the opening rounds. Liam Lawson finished seventh for Racing Bulls, with Pierre Gasly eighth. Carlos Sainz fought hard to ninth for Williams, while Oliver Bearman rounded out the points in tenth after a gritty drive for Haas.
It was an attrition-heavy afternoon overall, with multiple retirements throughout the field adding to the chaos. Alexander Albon was among those who did not finish after contact early in the race.

Looking Ahead: Monaco Grand Prix
The F1 circus heads to the most glamorous venue on the calendar for the Monaco Grand Prix, with the race taking place on Sunday 7 June at the Circuit de Monaco. After the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was cancelled earlier in the season due to the conflict in the Middle East, the Monaco weekend carries extra significance as the series seeks to find its rhythm on the European leg of the calendar.
Can anyone stop Antonelli and Mercedes in the principality? Leclerc, a Monaco specialist who has come agonisingly close to winning on home streets in recent years, will be desperate to deliver for Ferrari on this most prestigious of stages.
