2026 Austrian Grand Prix Review: Russell Holds Off Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring

George Russell ended a frustrating run with a controlled victory at the Red Bull Ring, holding off a charging Max Verstappen to win the Austrian Grand Prix. It was the Briton's second win of 2026 and a timely reminder of his quality after a difficult few weeks.

Russell led from pole to flag, crossing the line 1.6 seconds clear of Verstappen, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli completing the podium just three tenths further back. The win lifts Russell back to second in the standings, though Antonelli's lead remains commanding.

A Pole Win Built on Saturday

This victory was set up the day before. Russell claimed pole with a stunning final lap, produced moments after Verstappen crashed out of Q3 at Turn 9 and brought out the yellow flags. The stewards examined whether Russell had lifted appropriately for the warning, but he escaped investigation and kept top spot.

That left the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton second and third on the grid, with Verstappen recovering to start fifth after his accident. The scene was set for a tense Sunday in Styria.

Russell Controls, Verstappen Charges

Russell made a clean getaway and settled into a rhythm at the front. Behind him, Verstappen carved his way forward with typical aggression, and on lap 11 he forced Hamilton wide onto the gravel at Turn 3 in a robust move that the stewards judged needed no action.

Two virtual safety car periods, on laps 23 and 53, threatened to shuffle the order and hand Verstappen a route into the lead. Russell briefly ran wide on lap 58 and lost a chunk of time, but he gathered himself and never relinquished the position.

Verstappen pushed hard to the flag and Antonelli was right with him at the end, but Russell had just enough in hand. It was a mature, composed drive from the Mercedes man.

Antonelli Extends His Lead

Third place was another excellent return for Antonelli, who continues to make light of his teammate's experience advantage. The young Italian leads the championship by 40 points and looks increasingly assured at the front of the field.

Oscar Piastri took fourth for McLaren, with Hamilton recovering to fifth for Ferrari after his early brush with Verstappen. Isack Hadjar drove superbly to sixth in the second Red Bull.

A Tough Day for Ferrari and McLaren's Norris

Lando Norris could only manage seventh on a frustrating afternoon for the McLaren driver, finishing behind cars he would expect to beat. Leclerc endured a disappointing day to come home eighth, with Ferrari unable to convert their strong grid positions into a podium.

Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad rounded out the points in ninth and tenth, a strong double score for Racing Bulls.

Cadillac's Nightmare and Other Retirements

It was a brutal debut weekend chapter for Cadillac. Both cars retired inside the first five laps with brake overheating, Valtteri Bottas stopping with a brake fire and Sergio Perez reporting smoke in the cockpit.

Carlos Sainz was an early casualty too, stopping on the start-finish straight with an electrical problem that triggered the first virtual safety car. Lance Stroll retired on lap 45 with a suspected ERS issue.

Antonelli remains in firm control, but Russell's win keeps Mercedes well clear at the top.

Looking Ahead: British Grand Prix
