2026 British Grand Prix Review: Leclerc Wins at Silverstone

By Alexis Pratsides

Charles Leclerc took his first British Grand Prix victory at Silverstone, converting a late safety car into a win that had looked unlikely for most of the afternoon. It was the Monegasque's ninth career win and Ferrari's most convincing weekend of the season so far.

George Russell finished second and Lewis Hamilton third, giving the record crowd of 564,000 two British drivers on the podium. It was the best attended Grand Prix in the sport's history.

Antonelli's Afternoon Unravels

Kimi Antonelli had taken pole with a 1:28.111 and looked the likely winner. He then clipped a kerb at Copse and broke his left-front wheel shield, which cost him two extra pit stops.

A five-second penalty for track limits finished the job, dropping him from ninth to fifteenth. For a driver who had barely put a wheel wrong all year, it was a rare unravelling.

The Safety Car That Decided It

Max Verstappen lost control at Stowe on lap 48 and brought out the safety car. The race finished under yellow flags, and the timing handed the advantage to Leclerc.

Verstappen retired, as did Alexander Albon, who picked up a ten-second penalty for a collision with Oliver Bearman at turn six before stopping.

McLaren's Quiet Day

Lando Norris came home fourth, unable to convert home advantage into a podium. Oscar Piastri damaged his front wing in first-lap contact with Liam Lawson at Brooklands and never recovered.

Isack Hadjar took fifth for Red Bull, with Lawson sixth and Arvid Lindblad seventh for Racing Bulls. Gabriel Bortoleto scored for Audi in eighth.

Championship Standings After Round 9

Antonelli held the lead on 179 points, with Russell closing to 154. Hamilton's podium came with a five-second penalty for a false start and a later reprimand for a yellow-flag infringement, a scrappy weekend that still ended on the rostrum.

Looking Ahead: Belgium

Spa-Francorchamps came next, a circuit where Mercedes had been quick all year and where Antonelli would be looking to make Silverstone an anomaly rather than a pattern.
