The modern Fiat 500 revived a name first used in 1957, and did it by reinterpreting the original's proportions rather than copying them. It is a genuinely small car in an era when very few remain, which is much of its appeal, and the colour palette has always been central to the way it is sold. It is widely credited with proving that a retro design could carry a mainstream city car for well over a decade.
