We have chosen these icons for the way they captured the imagination of a nation and the world beyond, blending performance, design and sheer presence. Each one earns its place in any history of the great British car. Click through to explore the full story behind every legend.
Jaguar E-Type
Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car ever made, and few have ever argued. Launched in 1961, the E-Type fused breathtaking lines with a 150mph top speed for a fraction of the price of its rivals. It remains the definitive symbol of British style and swagger.
Jaguar D-Type
Born to win Le Mans, the D-Type did exactly that three years running. Its aircraft-inspired aerodynamics and distinctive tail fin gave it a presence like nothing else on the grid. This was Jaguar at its most fearless, a racing thoroughbred that wrote itself into motorsport history.
Jaguar XK120
When it appeared in 1948 the XK120 was the fastest production car in the world, its name a promise of 120mph. With its flowing wings and that glorious twin-cam straight six, it announced that post-war Britain could still lead the world. It was the car that made Jaguar a global name.
Jaguar MkII
Equally at home outside a country house or screeching away from a bank robbery, the MkII was the saloon that did it all. Quick, elegant and beautifully proportioned, it became the getaway car of choice and the gentleman driver’s pride. Few four-door cars have ever looked this good.
Jaguar XJS
Following the E-Type was an impossible task, yet the XJS forged its own legend as a continent-crushing grand tourer. Its silky V12 and long, low silhouette made every journey feel effortless. Decades on, its blend of pace and refinement has earned it a devoted following.
Jaguar XK150
The final flowering of the legendary XK line, the XK150 paired classic curves with proper modern muscle. It was among the first production cars fitted with disc brakes all round, marrying old-world grace to genuine racing pace. A grand tourer that could hold its own on the track.
Jaguar XJ6 Series 1
Sir William Lyons regarded it as his finest achievement, and the XJ6 set a standard the rest of the world spent decades chasing. Its hushed ride and peerless refinement redefined what a luxury saloon could be. The 1968 Series 1 remains, for many, the greatest British saloon ever made.
